Have you not noticed the hundreds of weird things this place is crawling with that want to kill us, many of which have claws for scratching at doors? [he still hasn't forgotten being attacked in that lab]

The more dangerous ones don't tend to come looking for you. The worst you have to deal with around the cabins is usually the zombies.
