Is that thing real gold?!

Gold plated, if anything. There's a limited amount of gold on this planet; you're not going to find anything larger than a ring or a necklace that's solid, generally. Especially not for something that's given out every year in large quantities.

Most of the planet's gold is in the core. Anything higher than that was probably left by meteorites.

You should be using the meteorites themselves instead; it's nicer to look at.

Some people do. Usually it's chips as inlays or something.

Somebody I used to know had a whole bangle made of it. One solid piece. Only nice thing she ever owned, and it was definitely worth a fortune in your area of the universe.

It depends on the boy. I can tell you what looks good; I can't tell you who made it or what it's made of or how much it would cost, usually.

Most boys can't tell you any of that regardless.

Because most of us don't care if it's diamond, cubic zirconia, or a plain glass crystal, so long as it looks nice.

[ taking that ring and holding it in his palm for a moment, then handing back ]

Judging by the weight and knowing it's you, it's probably diamond.

It's a clear sapphire. That's what happens when sapphires are produced under high-heat conditions. Your planet can't do it naturally, at least not very often.

Not on the surface, probably not.

It happens very rarely below the surface, too. And they're not usually this clear. This came from someplace outside your whole solar system, where they're common. Because the conditions are perfect for them.

It's not entirely surprising. It would be stupid to think the gems on this planet are the only ones around.

And yet every jeweler who's seen it has begged me to know what country it was mined in, not what planet.

Because none of them have no reason to think otherwise. This planet's barely started to touch the surface of space travel. No one's gone out further than Earth's moon. At least, no human or animal.
