The basic plot is a bunch of people dying, being placed in a room, given weapons, and sent out to kill aliens. Innocent or otherwise.

No one's ever seen them. They're on the same level as unicorns and werewolves to most people. Which isn't to say they don't exist; it's that no one knows they actually exist.

They don't know any better. People don't like to believe things if they haven't seen them for themselves.

But they like to write about killing them for no reason.

Humans are predictable like that. What's unfamiliar frightens them. You see the same thing with members of our own species. Hating and killing people for having a different skin color or different belief system.
