Leap years. They add an extra day in February for some reason. Last year was one.

What does the moon have to do with it?

It controls the tides, and has an effect on the planet's magnetic fields. It's in different places in the sky depending on what time of year it is.

I don't know. I never said it made any sense. I think it's supposed to be one month per cycle of the moon.

Try using the lunisolar calendar instead of the Gregorian calendar. Sometimes they add an extra month.

It's worse when you live in a country that uses two calendars for different reasons. Or when what year it is is based on when which emperor came into power. It's annoying.

Because we still need some way of telling what time of year it is without basing things solely on weather.

Ours is pretty straightforward. It divides all the seasons evenly.
